Charles George Missions Presents Day 15, “Unstoppable!”

Hello and welcome to Day 15, of our Christmas Podcast entitled, “Unstoppable.” Today we are going to talk about our God who is unstoppable. When He says something will come to pass, it shall come to pass. It does not matter who tries to stop God’s plan, it won’t work. And we will see one man who believed he could stop God’s plan, but he could not. That man was Herod the Great, one of the most wicked kings in the New Testament.

If you are joining us for the first time, we invite you to listen to our previous daily podcasts which began on December 1st. Thank you, Robert. I really appreciate your contribution to this podcast. Robert’s memories are all about family and family is the focus of today’s podcast because a tyrant named Herod the Great tried to destroy a family. That family consisted of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Herod wanted to kill the baby Jesus. Of course, you know he failed because as we said at the beginning of this podcast, God is unstoppable! Let’s start our discussion by looking at Matthew 2:1‑12.

We covered the wise men on Day 3, of our Christmas podcast series, “Wise Up” December 3. We will pick up from that discussion here. Briefly, the wise men (and we said there is nowhere in the Bible that said it was three wise men, there could have been more) the wise men sought Jesus and ended up at the court of Herod the Great for assistance in locating the baby Jesus. Matthew 2:3, says Herod was very troubled and all Jerusalem was also troubled when he learned the wise men were looking for this newborn who was a king. It is easy to understand why “all Jerusalem was also troubled” if you know something of this man’s character which we will briefly cover in a moment. Herod, after consulting the chief priests and the scribes instructs the wise men, they can find Jesus in Bethlehem of Judaea (v. 4-7). He doesn’t leave it there, however. He proceeds to lie and tell the wise men, “Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.” (v. 8) That was a bold‑faced lie. Nevertheless, the wise men depart and find this newborn king Jesus to whom they bring valuable gifts and whom they worship. But, when it is time to leave, God warns them in a dream “that they should not return to Herod.” So, they departed into their own country another way. (v. 12). Yes, they were wise men because they listened to God.  Thus, the baby Jesus was saved from being killed by the evil Herod. But what Herod does when he finds out he has been deceived by the wise men is one of the most despicable acts ever recorded.

Who was this King Herod? We will not go into a long history on this tyrant but simply say he was the ruling king in the territory of Judaea and he was the first of four Herods (a family name) to rule in that territory. He was Jewish but not a practicing Jew and the title was given to him was King of the Jews. So, when the wise men show up saying they are looking for the “King of the Jews” Herod was shaken. Herod is determined to find this newborn king and have him murdered because no one was going to take his throne. He was a king who killed anyone whom he thought was a threat to his kingship. He even killed his three sons to be sure he stayed on the throne. But, Matthew 2:16, goes on to tell us that when he, Herod, saw that he was mocked by the wise men, he was exceedingly angry and killed all the male children in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts, who were two years old and younger from the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

Herod was the incarnation of evil itself. There are no words to describe someone who would descend to such depths of depravity. Eventually, Herod the Great died a horrible death himself. It is believed that he had a chronic kidney disease exacerbated by a disease known as Fournier’s gangrene, an infection of the male genitalia. The infection was a fitting precursor to his demise considering he had male babies killed.

But, enough of Herod. Let’s give God his due praise. The point to be made in this podcast is that nothing stops God’s plans. He is unstoppable. It does not matter how powerful someone may appear to be they are not more powerful than God. God’s plan was for Jesus to be born and He was; for Jesus to die for our sins and He did; for Jesus to be raised from the dead and He was, and for the Holy Ghost to return to the earth and empower us and He did. God’s unstoppable plan is for us to live an abundant life (John 10:10b), to be in health and to prosper as our soul prospers (3 John 1:2), and for us to be unstoppable through the power that Jesus ordained us to have. (Luke 10:19). “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

So, wrap a gift and put a sticker on it from God to you that reads  “Unstoppable!”
