"The Anointing"

"The anointing breaks the yoke."

Welcome to Season 13 of our podcast, "Stay in His Presence." This year, the podcasts will focus on the Holy Spirit. We will cover 26 of His attributes, going through the alphabet from "A" to "Z."

Before we start, let's have a one-minute review of why we honor the Holy Spirit this year. Then, we will proceed to the ABCs of the Holy Spirit.

My name is Stephanie Wright. Welcome to Episode 1, "The Anointing"

The Lord impressed on me late last year to turn our attention to the Holy Spirit in 2025. In summary, we discussed how the Holy Spirit has not been given the recognition He deserves as the third person in the Godhead. We covered His purpose as our intercessor here on earth and as our advocate with the Father and Son in heaven.

When man was created and God said, "Let us make man in our image," (Genesis 1:26), it proved that the Holy Spirit was one with the Father and Son. Thus, there is no rivalry between them.

In another episode, we explained how a second-century writer, Tertullian defended the Holy Spirit as being One with the Father and Son. He coined the term "Trinity," and his teachings unequivocally stated that God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost were Three Gods in One.

We hope you grow closer to the Holy Spirit as we honor Him by studying His characteristics, "A" to "Z." First is "A," which stands for "Anointing." Our scriptures are from the Old Testament, Isaiah 61:1, Isaiah 10:27, and the New Testament, Luke 4:18.

When Jesus stood in the temple in Luke, Chapter 4, and said the Spirit of God was upon him and the Spirit anointed Him to do all the things listed in Luke 4:18—mirroring what was said in Isaiah 61:1-2—he was saying the "anointing breaks the yoke."

The anointing brings whatever we need, whether healing, peace, hope, joy, or anything good from God.

The anointing is a special endowment from God that delivers from bondage and empowers the believer to do the work assigned to her or him. We need the anointing of the Holy Spirit to do God's will. The Holy Spirit also resides in us to help guide us daily in our assigned missions.

Like Jesus, we are anointed to do the work and even greater works, as expressed in John 14:12.

To summarize, "A" stands for "The Anointing." We all need the anointing to be like Jesus and do what Jesus did—preach the gospel to the poor; heal the brokenhearted, preach deliverance to the captives, recover sight to the blind, and set at liberty those who are bruised.

This concludes this episode and segues into a special invitation for you. If you have not received Jesus as your Savior and Lord, today would be a good day to do so. Romans 10:9 says, "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Jesus from the dead, you shall be saved, that is, saved from a life of sinning against God to a life of serving Him and spending eternity with Him."

We covered His purpose as our intercessor here on earth. Romans 8:26, reads, Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities [weaknesses spiritual and moral]: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. He is our advocate, our representative with the Father and Son in heaven. John 14:16, And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever . . . John 14:17,  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.; John 14:26,  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you . . . ; and John 15:26, But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me . . .
When God created man and said, "Let us make man in our image" (Genesis 1:26), this proved that the Holy Spirit was one with the Father and Son. Thus, there is no rivalry between them.
In another episode, we explained how a second-century writer named Tertullian defended the Holy Spirit as being One with the Father and Son. Tertullian coined the term "Trinity," derived from the Latin "Trinitas." His teachings stated unequivocally that God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost were three Gods in One.

We hope you will grow closer to the Holy Spirit as we honor Him by studying 26 of His characteristics from "A" to "Z." First up is "A," which stands for "Anointing." Our scriptures are from the Old Testament, Isaiah 61:1 and 10:27, and the New Testament, Luke 4:18.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound . . . Isaiah 61:1

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised . . . Luke 4:18.

Isaiah 10:27 reads, "And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing."

When Jesus stood in the temple in Luke 4 and said the Spirit of God was upon him and the Spirit anointed Him to do all the things listed in Luke 4:18—mirroring what was said in Isaiah 61:1—2— he was saying the "anointing breaks the yoke."

A farmer would use oxen to farm the land. To keep the oxen under control as he steered them in the fields, the farmer would place a large circular device around the oxen's neck called a yoke. Thus, a yoke is a symbol of bondage for a human being. Symbolically, people are set free from whatever type of bondage has them imprisoned, literally—for example, the body is in physical suffering—or metaphorically—a broken heart or broken spirit. It doesn't matter because they are set free when the anointing falls on them.

I Corinthians 6:19-20 reads, "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."; John 14:17, "Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."; and Galatians 4:6, "And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father."

Like Jesus, we are anointed to do the work and even greater works, as expressed in John 14:12: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he also do; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to my Father."

We are to tell the good news—"preach good tidings"—to the poor. This applies to souls who are poor in the natural and poor in the spiritual. God always sends someone to "bind up the brokenhearted." The captives are not only those who are physically incarcerated but also those incarcerated by sin. They are those who are bound by Satan and cannot break free. It is our responsibility to pray and fast for their deliverance, not only to break free from the prison of sin but to stay free by walking and never returning.

Luke 4:18 mentions one thing that Isaiah 61:1 does not: "recovering of sight to the blind." To me, this has a literal meaning—miracle healing restoration of sight—and a figurative meaning—being brought out of the darkness of sin into the light of salvation.

To summarize, "A" stands for the Anointing. We all need the anointing to be like Jesus and do what Jesus did—preach the gospel to the poor; heal the brokenhearted, preach deliverance to the captives, recover sight to the blind, and set those who are bruised at liberty.
