We thank everyone for being with us today, and thank you, our listeners, for your past support and continued support. Today's podcast will cover who the Holy Spirit is and His role as our Comforter.

Welcome to Episode 2, "The Comforter," in our series "Stay in His Presence." I'm your host, Stephanie Wright.

We dedicate the podcasts to the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost this year. We are covering His characteristics or attributes from "A" to "Z." I had hoped to take the podcast sequentially–A, B, C, D, E, etc.; however, because life does not flow sequentially, we will move randomly throughout the alphabet instead. Last week, we covered the letter "A" for Anointing. This week, we will skip to the letter "C" for Comforter.

Many of us need comfort right now because of trauma in our lives, because of world events, or just because we need His reassurance as we go through each day.

It's time to learn about the Holy Ghost, "The Comforter."

Comforter

Let's see what the scriptures say about our Holy Ghost Comforter. John 14:16 reads, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

One of the definitions of “Comforter” according to Strong’s Concordance is “consoler” and it uses the same word “comforter” in defining the Holy Ghost. Comforter also means advocate,  (like a lawyer or attorney), and has other meanings as well which we will look at later but for now let’s focus on the Holy Spirit as our comforter, as our consoler.

If ever there was a time, we needed comforting, it is now. In the midst of turmoil, sickness, and death in the United States and around the world, we need a Comforter and we need comforting. No one can comfort us like the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is the only one who can answer every kind of hurt, pain, and confusion. When your peace is being ravaged by the storms of life, He is the comfort in the storm. I am talking what I have experienced. In one of the most hurtful hours of my life when the pain was so unbearable, I didn’t think I could take another breath, I felt His presence move slowly from the crown of my head down to my feet. That comfort empowered me to face another day with a mind to fight for myself and my family and most of all I was encouraged and empowered to continue in this walk with the Lord. I have never forgotten that experience!

Acts 2:2‑4

When the Holy Spirit descended on the 120 in the Upper Room on Pentecost, He first came as “a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind” and “appeared unto them [in] cloven tongues like as of fire” and then “they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” I love that the Holy Spirit came as wind and fire. When I think of the Holy Ghost coming as a mighty, rushing wind I hear and feel Him, seemingly, blowing away whatever it is that causes hurt and pain. When I think of fire, I think of the Holy Ghost Comforter burning up whatever is causing discomfort. If we let Him, He will rush in and blow away, burn away, even scare it away with the noise of His approach, whatever is attacking us. And like Moses’ burning bush, the Holy Spirit fire is never consumed. (Exodus 2:2‑4).

So, whatever you need comforting for, comforting in or comforting through, the Holy Spirit can be your consoler and your comforter. Just ask Him. One of the attributes of the Holy Spirit which we will discuss in a later episode in this series is the Holy Spirit as our intercessor. If you do not know how to pray, the Holy Spirit will intercede for you. Let’s discuss how the Holy Spirit does that as we continue.

Who is the Holy Ghost?

Now, as alluded to earlier, let’s discuss, who is the Holy Ghost? He is the third person of the Godhead, the Trinity. He is God the Holy Spirit. He is The Spirit of God. He was sent from heaven by God the Father and God the Son to continue the work that Jesus started. 1 Peter 1:12, says,“the Holy Ghost was sent down from heaven;”

John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

The Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost is the fire of which John the Baptist spoke in Matthew 3:11, and of which Jesus spoke in Acts 1:5. Matthew 3:11 “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:” Acts 1:5 John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

The Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit is a person not an “it.” The Holy Spirit lives in you as a believer who has received Jesus into your life. John 14:17. So, remember that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is our prayer intercessor. When we do not know how to pray, He intercedes for us to the throne of heaven.  Romans 8:26-27.  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

What Does the Holy Ghost Do?

The Holy Ghost empowers us to do and to be what God has called us to do and to be. The scriptures specifically say we are empowered to be witnesses of Christ. Acts 1:8. “But you shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” In other words, witnesses wherever you go. As stated before, we have a lot to discuss about the Holy Ghost, thus, the witness and the work is another podcast that can stand alone. So, please stay with us.

This is Stephanie Wright. May the Comforter’s love, peace, and protection be with you until next time.
